According to the EPA, 280 gallons of water per average household is wasted each day. This is what is called “gray water” that could be reused, and is what water reclamation is designed to achieve. There is “white water,” which is the water we drink, “black water” or sewage water that is treated at special plants, and everything else in between that can be reused for things that don’t require white water, such as irrigation and toilet water. A typical water reclamation system routs the gray water to a special treatment system that cleanses the water either with filtration systems or chemical treatment. Chemical treatment is more advanced, in that it breaks down contaminates in the water on a much more concentrated level. The chemicals either kill harmful microorganisms, break down various unwanted chemicals within the mix, or a combination of both.

Water is the most essential source for us to thrive. Yet is a component that is usually taken for granted, probably because two-thirds of the earth is covered with water. But 97.5% of that is salty ocean water, and of the 2.5% that is fresh, more than 60% of that is frozen. According to a 10/25/2011 Reuters report, water use is growing at more than twice the rate of world population increase, and predicted to increase 50% by 2025 in developing countries. Factor in climate change, unexpected droughts, contamination, and we have what is known as “water risk.”

“Water is going to quickly become a limiting factor in our lifetimes,” said Ralph Eberts, executive vice president of a $2.3 billion engineering business that designs water systems in more than 100 countries. Water risk is already affecting international businesses and cutting into their profit margins, which results in rising prices for consumers. Moreover, only about 8% of the world’s fresh water supply goes to domestic use, such as drinking, bathing, and cooking, while 70% is used for irrigation.
